About Us

The Carolina Cup, established in 1930, is South Carolina's largest social sporting event. "The Cup" draws over 65,000 fans to mingle in a sea of fashions and savor sumptuous tailgate picnics.

The Colonial Cup established in 1970 is "Where Winners Become Champions". The final race-meeting on the national tour draws the best American steeplechase horses, trainers, jockeys, and owners competing for national championship titles.

Mission

The Carolina Cup Racing Association is a non-profit corporation that operates:

  • Springdale Race Course Training Center (a thoroughbred racehorse training center)
  • The Carolina Cup Races
  • The Colonial Cup Races

Purpose

The purpose of the Carolina Cup Racing Association is to raise money for charity. Net profits from our total operations are given to The Kershaw County Medical Center annually.

Media Coverage The Springdale Race Course race-meetings attract television coverage from every corner of the state of South Carolina, also from Charlotte, North Carolina, and into Georgia. SCETV broadcasts live, a one hour show airing live on both ETV and The South Carolina Network. The Carolina Cup and the Colonial Cup both receive a wide reach of national print media, Television Broadcasting, Radio Broadcasting, and extensive attention on the world wide web, including The New York Times, Southern Living Magazine, The Travel Channel, The John Boy and Billy Radio Show, YahooSports.com, FoxSports.com, and CBSSportsLine.com

Founders Harry D. Kirkover of upstate New York built and ran the Springdale Race Course facility while Ernest L. Woodward of Jell-O Company financed it. Colonial Cup founder Marion duPont Scott of the DuPont fortune purchased the facility in 1954. Upon her death, the property was bequeathed to the State of South Carolina to be used soley for equine purposes.
Community Involvement The Camden and Kershaw County community has been committed to the Carolina Cup since its establishment in the 1930's. Our race-meetings depend on the over 100 volunteers that have worked at "The Cup" for decades. Carolina Cup Racing Association is a not-for-profit organization that donates annually to our primary charities: Kershaw County Medical Center, The Junior Welfare League of Camden and the Camden Jaycees.
